The simulator is going well apart from the generator not working which has not been addressed yet. The simulator gets turned on every Saturday morning before racing starts.
Both the kids & adults in training courses like to use it and have to queue up on a wet windy day. There is a little girl that has not been old enough for Tackers that loves to use it & asks me to turn it on if it is off.

Our simulator program has been slow but steady all year, I’ve maybe only taken 7 or 8 people this year, I find nearly all of the younger clients only need 4 – 5 sessions before most of them graduating to the water, but not all staying in the sport.

A couple of months ago I took 2 training physiotherapists for a simulator sail. There have been more women than usual (I think) in the gym as out/inpatients.

For this moment I’m preparing offer of „little sailing education park”. After A trial project it may be the first step of the new local connect to sailing program in cooperation with local government.
One of the core activities will be lesson on sailing simulator. I hope to start in spring.
We also use simulator as an alternative for training on water during juniors clinics.

Last month, we did a pilot study on the National Paraplegic Hospital on Toledo (Spain), in order to prepare everything for the project that is going to start between January 8 and end of February.
During 2018, we have carried out project a PhD on “Influence of the biomechanical, anthropometric factors and navigation on the performance of hiking technique using simulated dinghy sailing”
Using this protocol, we have evaluated sailors from different Olympic Laser Teams (Spain, Norway and Canada).

Ann Arbor
We are looking forward to collaborating with the new sailing simulator program based in Sandusky, Ohio. The simulators from Michigan and Ohio will be used for a school event at the Sandusky School District in early January and later in the month both simulators will taken to the Cleveland Boat Show. We are also working together on a new program, which we hope to start next year, that will take the simulators to public events to raise awareness about sailing and provide initial sailing instruction. Because of the simulator, we have connected with a number of adaptive recreation programs and have collaborated to launch and expand programs. Through a partnership with Adaptive Adventures we were able to start water based adaptive sailing in the Ann Arbor area for the 2018 sailing season. It was a successful first year and look forward to the program growing in 2019. We are working with the rehab departments at the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor VA Hospitals on a variety of adaptive sports and hope to develop additional simulator and water based adaptive sailing opportunities with these organizations.

In August, 2018, we joined the faculty at East Carolina University and moved our simulator from Florida International University (Miami) to our new Simulation Lab. We are currently submitting the IRB proposal and have “recruited” four persons who have physical disabilities to participate in our Learn to Sail program. We will be measuring the effectiveness of the program, specifically looking at participants’ sailing ability and quality of life (QOL) via a pre and post test. The instrument we will use to measure quality of life is the WHOQOL-BREF developed through the World Health Organization. It is a 26 item scale which includes four domains: physical health, psychological, social relationships and environment. We will also include the qualitative method of conducting interviews for data collection.

Putting the simulators to good use.
A good example of how we can leverage the simulators and STEM USSailing curriculum to have a broad reach impact. Pun intended LOL
More than 50 kids went sailing and more than a dozen learn enough in their time on the simulators the basics of sailing up wind on a triangle course. All 50 + learned to sail a two turn reaching course. We had everyone solo and many did two sailors with one on the rudder and one on the sail. It was great to see how quickly they learned the basics and how many came back multiple times to keep adding challenges and learn more about sailing. For over 8 hours total over 3 days there were lines 6 students deep on each simulator waiting for their turn. I would guess there were over 190 individual sailing times of about 5 minutes per sailing opportunity and the students were still lined up at the end of each day. Mic, Suzanne and Brent all did a great job amongst the 3 days of fevered sailing simulations. Thanks to Mike Zuilhof for help with transportation.
